Welcoming a new dog into the family is bound to be equal parts exiting and overwhelming. Learning how to live with a brand new pup can be challenging: how will they behave? Will they be calm and obedient or will they be wild and rebellious? No matter their disposition, we have some pro tips on how to train you brand new pup.
- Be consistent
Perhaps the most important tip you can follow when training a new dog, whether it's a puppy or an adult dog, it is extremely important to remain consistent. Being consistent means staying true to a routine and commands. Refrain from switching things up on your pup. Do not allow your dog to sit next to you on the sofa if you will not always allow your dog to sit next to you on the sofa. If you respect the routine, things will flow smoothly.
- Be realistic
It is not fair to your dog or the training process to be unrealistic with your expectations. Your new companion is learning the ropes right alongside you, so take your progress step by step. It is unrealistic for you to expect your dog to learn be potty trained within an hour. Take it day-by-day, trick by trick, and challenge by challenge.
- Issue Rewards
Hard work and a good job should be rewarded--and your new dog will appreciate it. Find the type of treat your pup finds the tastiest and use it to reward and encourage good behavior. This process will make tricks stick and your progress more successful.
- Show your dog what you want him/her to do
Canines do not communicate the same way in which humans do, so you need to be patient and respectful regarding this disparity. In the most patient way, show your dog what you want him or her to do. They do not immediately hear a word and know what it means--this takes time. Be intentional and direct, but be gentle and patient.
- Feed them well
Find a type or brand of food that is healthy and nutritious for your dog, and one that your dog enjoys. If your pooch is well fed, they are more likely to be well behaved. If your dog gets the nutrients they crave and require, chances are the training process will be more positive.
